Last month, Golden City Council voted 6-0 to ban flavored tobacco and nicotine products including vapes, cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos. The ban will go into effect on January 1, 2024.
Nine out of 10 people who smoke cigarettes daily begin before they are 18 years old, and studies show that 81% of people who say they have ever used tobacco started with a flavored product. By eliminating these products, the community aims to reduce the initiation and tobacco use amongst Golden residents, especially teens and young adults.
This ban on flavored tobacco products sends a powerful message about prioritizing public health over profits. It shows that Golden is committed to creating a healthier, tobacco-free environment for future generations.
