Lakewood Community Council unanimously passed a non-cigarette tobacco retailer licensing ordinance in January 2019, designed to protect youth from tobacco. The ordinance requires that any business selling non-cigarette tobacco (including vape) products in the community of Lakewood obtain an annual license. Additional provisions include the prohibition of self-service displays of all tobacco products except in tobacco-only businesses and tobacco retail establishments within 500 feet of youth-oriented facilities. The support of Citizens for a Healthier Lakewood, a coalition of concerned local residents, was instrumental in this effort.
