Menthol E-Cigarette Sales On the Rise Following 2020 FDA Flavor Guidance

February 22nd, 2021

In February 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enacted a policy prohibiting flavored cartridge-based vaping products, but still allowing for the sale of tobacco- and menthol-flavored cartridges, open-systems and disposable e-cigarettes.

Since the policy was passed, a study funded by Truth Initiative found that sales of menthol-flavored e-cigarettes increased dramatically.

This indicates that the FDA policy did not work as well as intended to prevent the use of flavored vape products by youth. Truth Initiative and other health organizations are calling for more widespread limitations on flavored products to protect young people.
