If you have seen advertisements for Zyn or similar nicotine pouches, you are not alone — these new flavored nicotine products are gaining popularity and raising public health concerns.
Oral nicotine pouches and lozenges are a new category of tobacco product that is used similarly to snus – a type of smokeless tobacco pouch that does not produce saliva, making it spit-less. Unlike snus, these pouch and lozenge products do not contain leaf tobacco but the products are derived from tobacco and contain nicotine, which is addictive and harmful.
Common brands include Zyn, On!, and Velo, all of which are sold in a variety of flavors. Flavored tobacco products are known to appeal to youth, hooking them with addictive nicotine. Sales of pouch and lozenge products increased sharply in the first half of 2020, and 13% of 15-24 year olds surveyed in fall 2020 had used these flavored products at least once in the month prior.
