Denver Mayor Vetoes Flavored Tobacco Ban

December 21st, 2021

Last week, Mayor Hancock vetoed the Denver City Council’s proposed flavor ban. Denver City Council fell one vote short of overruling the veto on Monday.

The bill would have restricted the sale of flavored tobacco products but included exemptions for pipe tobacco, hookah and some types of cigars. Councilmembers also expressed a desire to limit the availability of flavored products in the market overall to reduce their appeal and ease of access to children.

In vetoing the bill, Mayor Hancock expressed a desire to create more broad legislation targeted towards reducing youth tobacco use.

There is still action surrounding flavor regulation happening on a national scale, as the FDA continues to tighten authorization standards for flavored vape products.
