Start Strong, Stay Strong—For You and Your Baby

Quitting tobacco and other nicotine products is especially important during pregnancy; we have resources to help.

For many pregnant people, pregnancy is a powerful motivator to quit using tobacco and other nicotine products. But even with motivation, most people who try to quit do better with help. That’s because nicotine is one of the most addictive substances around.

Fortunately, there are free resources in your community to help you quit and stay quit after your pregnancy.

The Baby & Me Tobacco Free Program offers free personalized counseling for pregnant people, including four sessions during your pregnancy and up to six sessions after you have your baby. Program participants can receive up to $400 in electronic gift cards for quitting and staying tobacco-free.

After your baby is born, any member of your household who also wants to quit tobacco and other nicotine products can enroll in the program and receive up to $300 in electronic gift cards for quitting and staying tobacco and nicotine-free!

The Baby & Me Tobacco Free Program is widely offered over the phone and in-person at some public health agencies around Colorado.

Stories of Starting Strong

Here’s How the Program Works

  1. Check to See if You Qualify: You can enroll if you are less than 37 weeks pregnant AND if you either: currently use tobacco and other nicotine products, have used tobacco or other nicotine products at any time during your pregnancy, or if you used tobacco or other nicotine products in the three months before your pregnancy.
  2. Apply for the Program: You can enroll by being referred by your local health agency OR by referring yourself on the Baby & Me website. To be referred, stop into one of the public health departments at the bottom of this page. If you want to apply yourself, follow the instructions on the enrollment form.
  3. Get Accepted to the Program: Someone from Baby & Me will follow up shortly after you have applied and let you know if you qualify and are accepted to the program.
  4. Get Quit Support During Pregnancy: Attend four telehealth online or in-person counseling sessions during your pregnancy to help you quit for good. At each session, participants take a carbon monoxide (CO) monitor breath test or a saliva test to test for tobacco or nicotine use. Participants will also receive electronic gift cards during prenatal sessions one and two regardless of your quit status. To receive gift cards at sessions three and four, you must test tobacco and/or nicotine-free.
  5. Get Quit Support After the Baby is Delivered: After your baby is born, participants are eligible to receive monthly counseling sessions for six additional months. If you test tobacco and nicotine-free, you are eligible to receive electronic gift cards for each session you attend. Vouchers can be used to purchase products at Walmart (restrictions include tobacco-related products, alcohol, firearms).

Tobacco users who live with pregnant women can also enroll. By successfully quitting tobacco, they can also receive gift cards after the baby is born.

Additional Resources: Cannabis & Pregnancy

Similar to tobacco, cannabis use while pregnant is not recommended. Visit CDPHE’s Cannabis, You and Your Baby to learn more about how cannabis and marijuana use can affect your pregnancy and your baby. You can also find more information about cannabis use while pregnant and breastfeeding on this State of Colorado Cannabis page.

Baby & Me Tobacco-Free also helps those who are pregnant or postpartum, and their partners, quit using cannabis. Get started today by following the same steps listed in the “Here’s How the Program Works” section above.
