Support Your Teen’s Growth

Tobacco and nicotine use by teens has become a growing concern, with many youth using products to deal with stress or fit in with peers. As a parent, it’s important to stay informed and proactive in guiding our teens away from these products.

Research tells us that when young people have a trusted adult they can talk to about life’s issues, they’re less likely to engage in risky behaviors like substance use and vaping. We have a powerful influence on their choices, and the conversations can make a big difference.

You're Not the Only One Worried

Conversations Matter: Talking to Your Teen

Talking to a teen about vaping might seem awkward, but it’s one of the most important discussions we can have. Here are some strategies to make it easier and more effective:

  1. Ask What They Know: Start by asking your teen what they know about vaping. If they share specific details, take the time to discuss what’s true and clear up any misconceptions together.
  2. Highlight the Good in Your Relationship: Remind your teen of their unique qualities—what makes them special, talented, and strong. Acknowledge these positive aspects to show you’re invested in their well-being and not just criticizing them.
  3. Develop a Game Plan: Help your teen create a plan for how to say “No” to vaping. While a simple “No thanks” may work, practicing other responses will prepare them for different situations.
  4. Communicate the Rules: Establish clear household rules about vaping and let your teen know the consequences if those rules are not followed. Clear guidelines and boundaries help them make healthier choices.
  5. Stay Calm and Listen: When your teen opens up about vaping or shares something difficult, stay calm and avoid reacting with anger. Listening is key to building trust and ensuring your teen feels comfortable talking to you.
  6. Keep the Conversation Going: It’s okay if a conversation becomes tough—take a break and revisit it later. Ongoing, open communication is essential for building a strong foundation of trust.
  7. Start Early: The earlier you start talking about vaping, the more likely your teen will come to you with concerns later on. Early, honest conversations make a big difference.
  8. Use Key Moments: Take advantage of opportunities, such as when vaping is mentioned in a TV show or a news story. Use these moments to ask your teen how they feel about vaping and listen closely to their answers.
  9. Stay Informed: Learn about the risks and realities of vaping. Understand what products are being marketed to teens and how they work. Being informed makes you a stronger resource for your teen.
  10. Be a Positive Example: If you smoke or vape, consider quitting. Your actions speak louder than words, and quitting can set a positive example for your teen. Resources like the Colorado QuitLine are available to help you quit for good.

Just the Facts

Sometimes it can feel like your teen knows more than you about trends and culture. But remember, you don’t have to be an expert. We can do research together with our children and learn together. Here are some important facts to get you started:

More than two-thirds of people who try a cigarette progress to smoking daily,1 and nine out of 10 adults who smoke start by age 18.2

In Colorado, 30% of high school students have tried vaping and 17%, or about 1 in 6, have tried cigarettes.3
