Start the Conversation: How to Talk to Your Teen About Vaping

July 25th, 2024

Parents, it’s time to get proactive! Talking to your teen about vaping can seem daunting, but it’s one of the most important conversations you can have. Here’s how to make it engaging and effective.

Ask What They Know

Kick off the conversation by asking your teen what they know or have heard about vaping. If they mention specific details, take the time to verify the facts together. Share anything you find confusing, surprising, or concerning, and ask for their thoughts.

Highlight the Good in Your Relationship

Emphasize the positive aspects of your relationship. Focus on what makes your teen special—their personality, talents, and skills. This approach shows that you care and are not just critiquing them.

Develop a Game Plan

Work with your teen to develop a plan to say “No” to vaping. A simple “No thanks” might work, but it’s good to have other options ready. Practice different responses together so your teen feels prepared for any situation.

Communicate the Rules

Discuss your household rules and expectations about vaping. Clear guidelines help teens make healthier decisions. Make sure they understand the consequences of not following these rules.

Stay Calm and Listen

When your teen shares something unexpected or difficult, don’t react with anger or fear. Just listen. This makes it easier for them to open up and trust you with their feelings and experiences.

Keep the Conversation Going

If a conversation gets tough, it’s okay to take a break and return to it later. Consistent, ongoing discussions are key to building trust and understanding.

Start Early

The sooner you show your child that you’re open to talking about vaping, the sooner they’ll come to you with their concerns. And they will come to you!

Use Key Moments

When vaping comes up in a TV show or broader conversation, use it as an opportunity to ask your teen how they feel about it. Let them guide the discussion and really listen to their answers.

Stay Informed

Educate yourself about the risks and realities of vaping. Understand what products are out there and how they are marketed to young consumers.

Be a Positive Example

If you smoke or vape, consider quitting. Your behavior greatly influences your child’s likelihood of using these products. Resources like the Colorado QuitLine can help you quit for good.

Seek Support

If you’re concerned that your teen may be vaping or at risk, reach out to health care professionals or resources like the Colorado QuitLine or My Life My Quit for guidance and support.

Your influence helps your teen make smart, healthy decisions for their future. Keep the conversation going and be there for them every step of the way!
