FDA to Decide Fate of Vapes

September 8th, 2021

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will decide by Sept. 9 what e-cigarettes and vapes can stay on the market. So far, the federal agency has blocked the sale of 55,000 products.

Last year, e-cigarette manufacturers had to submit applications to the FDA for approval for sale. The government agency has until Sept. 9 to decide the fate of other products, though it is expected to miss that deadline. E-cigarette makers submitted applications for millions of products, so decisions might be announced after this week’s deadline.

One of the deciding factors for vaping products is whether each product serves a net public good. Does the product’s benefit to adult smokers trying to quit outweigh the risk to teens who haven’t smoked before?
